Lockdown Bozza: In April, The South African government produced a Risk Adjusted Strategy that provided regulations covering a wide range of activities across many sectors and services for the different risk levels. However the document was difficult for the general public to understand, and not easily accessible. This left South Africans feeling confused as to the rules surrounding the various lockdown levels. This confusion was further increased by the distribution of “Fake News”.
Lockdown Bozza was created to solve this problem. It is a free to use, progressive web application (PWA) that makes lockdown regulations simple. The app allows South Africans to see what they can and cannot do quickly, easily and reliably. It lets the user select their district, so they can get the information specific to their area. Activities are then displayed in traffic light bubbles that quickly show what is permitted or not: Green meaning the activity is allowed, Amber meaning there are some restrictions and Red meaning the activity is not permitted. There is also a countdown to the start or end of the national curfew.
The idea was born after hearing the President’s speech on 23 April announcing how South Africa would move from national lockdown, which would end at midnight on 30 April. Rahul Patel, a tech entrepreneur focused on using technology to improve African lives, was left confused by the announcement.

Meanwhile, software developers and entrepreneurs Ahrem Posthumus and Adam Romyn, were having a very similar conversation down in Cape Town.
Rahul Sent an SMS in the late hours to Adam to share the idea which ultimately led to the collaboration and creation of the app.
The App is compatible with all devices. It was built as a next generation app known as a Progressive Web App (PWA). Simply put, the app and the website are the same thing. Simply visit the website on a phone, click options and select ‘add to homescreen’. This will install the app to the phone, without the need to download it from either the Apple App or Google Play stores.
Reliability of the information
The App gets its information from gazetted government guidelines and industry associations. It is then simplified and categorized to make it easily digested by the user. Lockdown Bozza aims to reflect any governmental changes to the regulations within 24 hours. And has also reached out to its users to help identify any incorrect information on the app requiring research and updating if necessary.
Ultimately, Lockdown Bozza are hoping to partner with the South African government to further ensure the reliability of the information, and the speed with which it is released on the app.
Once the app was live, the founders simply shared the link to their entire address book. Given the simplicity of the app, and the complexity of the regulations, the app went viral. That was the extent of their marketing plan. To date the App has close to 7 million interactions across over 1.3 million users.
Lockdown Bozza has created Facebook, Twitter and Instagram profiles to engage with their users and offer technical and regulatory support.
Lockdown Bozza aims to reach each and every South African, helping them to understand the new lockdown regulations, allowing them to stay safe and help rebuild their lives and the nation’s economy.
To help with this Lockdown Bozza would like to see the app zero rated, allowing its users to benefit from zero data costs, and therefore would like to partner with relevant network providers. The addition of other national languages, will also aid further adoption of the app and Lockdown Bozza are keen to partner with organisations that can assist with this initiative.
Lockdown Bozza is free to use, however, daily running costs are mounting. The creators have been inundated with requests from organisations who now require a customised version of the Lockdown App. The solution will assist organisations to greatly simplify COVID-19 compliance for their staff and/or students and ensure they rebuild trust and safety within formal environments, such as workplaces and schools.

The new investment will help the company scale up its technology platform, enhance customer experience and pursue further geographic expansion.
The homegrown start-up also revealed that it will begin operating under the new brand name North Ladder effective immediately, representing the company’s strategy of charting new markets and supporting individuals across the globe in their endeavour to elevate their financial situation. The disruptive and innovative technology platform is the first of its kind, providing access to verified buyers of second-hand goods and instant cash. North Ladder currently enables users to sell electronics such as phones, laptops, tablets, and smart watches, as well as luxury assets including watches and cars, with a unique option of buying it back within a few months.

Tayary an online logistics and delivery platform secures pre-seed investment from AUC Angels, Alex Angels, and The Cairo Angels.
Launched in 2017, Tayary is a multifaceted online platform that facilitates order delivery through both B2B and B2C models. The Alexandria-based startup has developed its own order-tracking feature in-house, allowing businesses and individuals to send and receive deliveries in an affordable and efficient manner. Their current services include: online food ordering, B2B delivery services, grocery and pharmacies shopping. During the lockdown initiated in Q2 of 2020, the startup was quick to respond by launching an additional on-demand courier service, Tayary Go, to help clients run errands while staying safe.
